Neuropsychology focuses on the complex area of brain-behavior interactions.

Experimental neuropsychology uses methods from experimental psychology to uncover the relationship between the nervous system and cognitive function. This approach involves studying healthy humans in a laboratory setting, although animal experiments are not uncommon.

Clinical neuropsychology applies neuropsychological knowledge to the assessment, management, and rehabilitation of people with neurocognitive problems due to illness or brain injury. It brings a psychological viewpoint to treatment, to understand how such illness and injury may affect, and be affected by psychological factors.

What does neuropsychology prepare students for?

The combination of coursework, internship, and honors thesis prepares students for graduate programs in neuroscience, cognitive neuropsychology, and clinical neuropsychology.

Research opportunities for students who concentrate in neuropsychology include the study of dementing illnesses at the East Central Florida Memory Disorder Clinic, investigation of the biomechanics of sport-related concussion as well as valid baseline and post-trauma measures at the Florida Tech Neuropsychology Laboratory, and visuospatial cognitive processing and brain-computer interfaces at the Cognition Applied Research Laboratory.

Students who earn a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Neuropsychology usually continue their education and training in graduate school or medical school programs. The research as well as the practical experience that is integral to the Florida Tech program augments the knowledge gained in the classroom and makes graduates very attractive candidates for the post-graduate institutions.
