Application Timeline
Applications open the second week of November.
RA Interest Meeting & Panel will be hosted the last week of classes in the Fall semester and the first week of classes in the Spring semester. (More details to come, watch out for more information in This Week in Student Life emails!) These meetings are not required, but they are very helpful to get to know the job better before applying, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of current RAs at each meeting.
Applications Close: The Friday of the first week of classes in the Spring semester.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Resident Assistant, you will:
- Cultivate a positive and inclusive floor community through programming and daily interactions.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource, connecting residents to campus services for academic, social, and personal support.
- Uphold community standards and university policies to ensure a safe and respectful living environment.
- Act as a peer mentor, role model, and mediator to help residents navigate college life.
- Develop and implement social and educational programs that align with the departmental curriculum.
- Participate in an on-call duty rotation to respond to crises and emergencies.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as room condition reports, maintenance requests, and hall opening/closing procedures.
Position Requirements
- Preferred qualifications: a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 at the time of hiring.
- Preferred qualifications: maintain a minimum semester GPA of 2.5 throughout the term of employment.
- Must be a full-time, degree-seeking student for the entire academic year.
- Must be in good academic and judicial standing with the university.
- Typically, candidates must have lived in a university residence hall for at least two semesters by the time of employment unless you have prior university Resident Assistant experience.
- Must reside on campus in their assigned residence during time of employment with time away requested to their supervisor.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, maturity, and a genuine desire to help others.
Compensation & Benefits

Important Time Commitments
The RA position requires a significant time investment. Key commitments include:
- Fall Training: RAs are required to return to campus approximately two weeks before the Fall semester begins for mandatory, intensive training.
- Weekly Meetings: Attendance at weekly staff meetings with your Residence Life Coordinator and fellow RAs is required.
- Duty: RAs participate in a rotating schedule for their building or area, including nights, weekends, and holidays. RAs are expected to be available from 8 PM - 8 AM on duty nights if called upon by a Resident Director or Professional Staff member.
- Hall Closings: RAs must remain on campus for a few days after commencement in both the Fall and Spring semesters to assist with closing the residence halls.
- Holiday Duty Coverage: Some RAs are required over Spring Break, Thanksgiving Break, and other holidays to maintain a presence in the halls and assist residents.
- Halls remain open for Winter Break, but Winter RAs are selected in a separate hiring process from internal candidates.
How to Apply
Once applications open in November, they will remain open until Friday of the first week of classes.
The application process includes an online application on the Florida Tech eRezlife website and includes several essay questions, a short video, and two references. One of the references must be a current Florida Tech RA.
During the online application you will get the opportunity to sign up for a group interview process. This interview will be approximately 3 hours long and occur on a Saturday in late January. It is encouraged for candidates to wear closed toed shoes and comfortable clothing to this interview. Those who have previously applied in this process do not need to attend this a second time.
After the group interview process there is a virtual interview between the candidate, a current RA, and a Resident Director (RD). This interview is more formal and will be conducted through the first and second weeks of February.
Leadership in the Department
The Community Director (CD) and Resident Director (RD) positions are both hired from internal candidates in the department as they require experience in learning our processes.
Summer RAs
Resident Assistants over the summer are hired from the prior academic year’s RA staff and utilizes a separate selection process.
