Nicholas Welsh

Meet Nicholas! He is a junior double-majoring in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in the College of Engineering & Science.

A local from Palm Bay, Florida, Nicholas grew up knowing about the university, so the chance to attend was always on his radar. He wanted a place where undergraduate students can get into research early, and Florida Tech offers exactly that. The small classes with professors who know his name and the location on the Space Coast made it an easy choice.

As a President’s Ambassador, he wants to showcase the experiences Florida Tech truly offers. He wants to keep advocating for undergraduate research, internship opportunities, and Florida Tech's tight-knit community. Additionally, he wants to grow as a communicator and give something back to the university that has given him so many opportunities already.

After graduation, Nicholas plans to pursue a graduate education in machine learning. He is currently doing research in computer vision in the NETS Lab, and his paper on vision-language models for spacecraft inspection was published at a CVPR 2026 workshop. Longer term, he'd like to work on problems where machine learning meets the real world, something he's already explored through research, internships, and personal projects. What excites him most is that he's still discovering where the field can take him.

His favorite thing about Florida Tech: “The people I've met in the NETS Lab. Presenting our work was a highlight, but my actual favorite thing is smaller than that. It's stopping by the lab between classes and getting pulled into whatever problem someone has on their screen. I came for the research and stayed for the people arguing about it.”

His involvement at Florida Tech: NEural TransmissionS (NETS) Lab (Undergraduate Researcher), Florida Tech Society of Math Students, Florida Tech Society of Quantitative Finance

His involvement off campus: Software Engineer Internship at JPMorganChase (Summer 2026 in Tampa, Florida), Software Engineer Internship at Modus Operandi (Summer 2025 to Spring 2026 in Melbourne, Florida)

In his free time: “I'm at the gym most mornings, and I almost always have a personal coding project going on the side. There's something nice about building things with no deadline attached. That plus time with friends and cooking covers most of my evenings.”
