Audience and Purpose for the OBM Specialist Certificate

The OBM Specialist Certificate provides practical training in organizational behavior management (OBM) for real workplace applications. Participants learn to identify performance challenges, analyze workplace systems and apply behavior-based solutions that improve organizational effectiveness.

This professional development certificate program is designed for professionals who want to improve workplace performance using behavioral principles. It is not an academic degree or university graduate certificate program.

The SPACE Model

The OBM Specialist Certificate introduces participants to the SPACE Model of OBM applicationScope, Pinpoint, Assess, Change, Embed. Similar to Six Sigma’s DMAIC, this structured framework provides a common language, set of tools, and systematic process for identifying, analyzing and addressing workplace challenges.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and define a business opportunity in their workplace
  • Design an OBM project that addresses this opportunity
  • Organize and lead a project team while obtaining organizational support
  • Apply evidence-based methods to implement and sustain improvements

A fillable PDF toolkit based on the SPACE Model is included with the program.

Program Structure

The certificate program is delivered online through Moodle and is organized into five modules, each corresponding to a phase of the SPACE Model:

  1. Scope – Frame the organizational opportunity
  2. Pinpoint – Define key behaviors or processes to address
  3. Assess – Collect and analyze relevant data
  4. Change – Implement evidence-based interventions
  5. Embed – Ensure changes are sustained and integrated

Each module requires an estimated 2.5 to 4.5 hours to complete and includes assigned readings, video lectures, applied activities, and discussion prompts. Participants have four months of access from the date of registration.

To earn the OBM Specialist Certificate, participants must complete all required coursework, assignments, and discussions across the five modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

The OBM Specialist Certificate is an online professional development program that introduces learners to organizational behavior management (OBM) methods and tools through a simulated project. Participants do not need to be employed or apply OBM in their current workplace to complete the program. Instead, learners practice with case studies and real-world scenarios while building fluency with OBM tools.

The program includes a fillable PDF toolkit based on the SPACE Model—Scope, Pinpoint, Assess, Change and Embed. By the end of the program, participants are prepared to begin applying OBM principle and tools in organizational settings.

No. Completing the OBM Specialist Certificate does not result in professional certification in organizational behavior management (OBM). The program awards a professional development certificate and continuing education units (CEUs) for behavior analysts and related professionals. CEUs earned can be applied toward maintaining existing professional certifications, such as those issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

At present, no accrediting body certifies individuals specifically in OBM. While OBM programs are increasingly recognized as meaningful professional credentials, they do not constitute professional certification. Programs resulting in professional certification in the U.S. are typically accredited by bodies such as the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The Association for Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA) provides more information on this distinction.

No. The OBM Specialist Certificate is open to all learners. A BACB certification, degree or prior experience in organizational behavior management (OBM) is not required.

The program includes an optional Foundations Module that introduces the basics of behavior analysis and organizational behavior management for participants who are new to the field or would like a refresher.

No. A textbook is not required for the OBM Specialist Certificate. All required course materials are included. Participants receive access to the interactive SPACE Model Toolkit at the start of the program. A printed workbook is also available for those who prefer a physical study aid. The workbook includes study questions, glossaries, guided notes and a printed version of the toolkit.

The OBM Specialist Certificate is fully online and self-paced within a 120-day (four-month) access period that begins upon purchase. It consists of five modules. Each module requires an estimated 2.5 to 4.5 hours to complete and includes assigned readings, video lectures, applied activities and discussion prompts. Suggested due dates are provided to help with pacing, but participants may progress at their own speed as long as the course is completed before access expires.

The OBM Specialist Certificate is designed for professionals who want to apply organizational behavior management (OBM) to improve workplace performance and organizational systems. It is appropriate for both behavior analysts and professionals who are new to OBM.

Because the program uses case studies and simulated projects, participants do not need to be currently employed to complete the certificate.

This program is ideal for:

  • Behavior analysts with or without OBM training
  • Professionals working in clinical ABA settings
  • Individuals without formal training in behavior analysis
  • Consultants and professionals who want to apply OBM in their workplace or transition into OBM-related roles

Participants complete the program with a practical understanding of how to apply OBM to workplace challenges, from identifying opportunities to designing and sustaining organizational improvements.

Organizational behavior management (OBM) training can support career advancement or transition into roles focused on organizational performance, leadership development, learning and development, process improvement and consulting.

Examples include:

  • Leadership Development Manager
  • Organizational Development Practitioner
  • Continuous Improvement Consultant
  • Manager of Learning and Development
  • Director of Operational Excellence
  • Director of Safety Solutions
  • Consultant or Senior Consultant
  • Director of Talent Development

No. BACB® certification is not required to work in organizational behavior management (OBM) roles. While BACB certification is important for clinical applications of behavior analysis, OBM roles are typically focused on organizational performance, systems improvement and workplace behavior change rather than clinical service delivery.
