Areas of Study

Automotive Engineering

This area of study is concerned with the application of fundamental engineering science concepts and basic mechanical and aerospace engineering methodologies to the design and analysis of modern vehicles for land, sea and air transportation, and their components and systems. In addition to the core undergraduate study curriculum, students wishing to specialize in automotive engineering can take graduate-level classes in internal combustion engines, road vehicle dynamics, automotive powertrains and related manufacturing technologies.

Design and Manufacturing

Focused on advanced and emerging design and manufacturing developments, this coursework concerns engineering design as an interdisciplinary area between engineering, the social sciences, behavioral science, computer science and artificial intelligence. Students will learn how to apply advanced design theories and methods, and design automation concepts to practical engineering problems. Advanced specialized course are offered in advanced design theory and methods, fundamentals of design for manufacturing, advanced CAD and design automation and manufacturing processes.

Dynamic Systems, Robotics and Controls

The student’s program of study in this area will be tailored to provide the background and training to pursue a career in a desired and related area of interest. Examples of related areas include design and control of dynamic systems, robotics, vibration, automotive engineering, energy and power systems, etc. Advanced graduate-level coursework includes courses in structural dynamics, mechatronics, instrumentation and measurement control, advanced dynamics, robotics and simulation of dynamic systems.

Structures, Solid Mechanics and Materials

Specialization in this area of study focuses on analytical and computational techniques as they apply in structural design, mechanics of solid bodies and material science. In addition to the engineering knowledge base obtained in the undergraduate program, graduate students can take advanced-level classes in finite element analysis, composite materials, elasticity, computational material science, fracture mechanics and fatigue of materials.

Thermal-Fluid Sciences

This area of study focuses on heat transfer, combustion and energy systems. Analytical, computational and experimental techniques are emphasized. The advanced coursework contains classes in viscous flows, experimental fluid dynamics, various modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation), as well as combustion fundamentals.
