About the Civil Engineering Program

Greetings and welcome to the web site of Florida Tech’s Civil Engineering program. The purpose of this message is to provide you a quick overview about what is unique about our Civil Engineering program.

Due to the small size of our program, we provide unique opportunities to our students to help develop them into outstanding engineers and citizens. A degree from Florida Tech is more than just an academic experience. Besides providing a great academic environment where all students can reach their full academic potential, the small size of our department allows our students to have an extraordinarily close relationship with our faculty, providing a dimension of access, leadership and mentoring which is impossible to achieve in institutions of a larger size. The department faculty members forge life-long relationships with many of our alumni. Indeed, we take great pride in the fact that all of the faculty members know all of the students by their first names by the time they are juniors.

Small class sizes mean the faculty members are able to teach courses which involve students doing real-world projects. This experience allows our students to join the work force as productive members from day one, requiring minimum on-job training. Our academic program is supported by a number of professional organizations and a very strong industry advisory board consisting of practicing civil engineering professionals who not only oversee the entire curriculum, but also participate in classroom lectures, and support our students with internships and scholarships.

Undergraduate Program

The Civil Engineering undergraduate curriculum is uniquely designed to provide a broad education in all of the six main areas of Civil Engineering (Construction, Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation and Water Resources Engineering). All students are required to take at least one course in each one of these areas. Students are also provided the flexibility to gain further expertise in one or more areas of their choice by taking appropriate Restricted and Design Electives.

The program has also designed exceptional courses to help students develop proficiency in leadership, communication and management — skills that are highly sought by prospective employers. In their senior year, undergraduate students take a two-course capstone design sequence in which they are responsible to design a multidisciplinary real-world design project using all applicable codes. Students who join our department will have the unique opportunity to learn from outstanding faculty members who not only bring extensive practical experience to the classroom (nearly all are professional engineers), but who are also accomplished researchers involved in exciting Civil Engineering research projects and the recipients of numerous awards in the areas of teaching, research and service. As a result, undergraduate students have many opportunities to participate in challenging, multidisciplinary collaborative research projects.

Graduate Programs

The master's-level Civil Engineering curriculum is designed so that students can get specialized education in any of the six main areas of Civil Engineering (Construction, Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation and Water Resources Engineering) which are broadly covered in the undergraduate program. In order to complete the M.S. degree, students must take four required courses in the area of their choice (e.g., construction management), and six additional elective courses which are selected from a wide list of courses for a non-thesis option, or four required courses, four additional elective courses, and six thesis credits for a thesis option.

The doctoral (Ph.D.) is also awarded in all major areas of Civil Engineering. Learn more about the doctoral program in civil engineering.

All students interested in the graduate programs are highly encouraged to learn more about our research, find out the research areas of interest of various faculty members, and to contact these faculty members to establish rapport even prior to coming to Florida Tech.

With the help of the industry advisory board, we are constantly innovating ensuring our curriculum and courses provide a unique combination of hands-on learning, theory and practical knowledge to prepare our students to meet the current and future civil engineering challenges.
