Student Advising

Guidance and mentoring are critical for student success during and after their time as undergraduate. Psychology has a strong culture built on understanding the importance of preparing our students for success after graduation. Each student is matched before their sophomore year with a faculty member for one-on-one advising with faculty members who specialize in the student’s direct area of study. Students meet with their faculty advisors at least once per semester as part of the registration advising process as well as when students need guidance.

Here’s what you can expect from the Florida Tech School of Psychology advising experience:

  • Graduate school, career, and internship advice and guidance.
  • Meetings prior to every semester’s registration to decide on specific courses for the next semester in keeping with program plans and graduation timelines.
  • A detailed program plan, updated at each meeting that allows students to project out multiple semesters into the future.
  • Discussing opportunities for academic extracurricular activities such as academic conferences, presentation opportunities, and research team membership.
  • Support for any problems or questions arising regarding the current semester’s courses, including helping students find strategies for success in courses where they may have struggles
  • Assistance in determining if a course can be dropped, how to expedite time to graduation, and navigating the process of bringing in courses from other institutions
  • Help with future plans, securing letters of recommendation, and guidance through the student’s next steps, after their undergraduate degree

In Psychology, we place a lot of stock in putting students first. We believe careful, attentive, academic advising is central to this goal.
