Frequently Asked Questions

Lab Safety & Training

Before you can begin working or conducting research in any COES laboratory, you must complete the required safety training modules. All laboratory personnel are required to complete basic safety training.

The path you take to complete this training depends on your employment status with the university:

  • If you are employed by the university (GSA, Student Assistant/CR, Federal Work Study, or Faculty):
  •
  • If you are NOT employed by the university (volunteers, or students working in a research lab as part of a course):

Note: Depending on your specific lab environment, additional specialized courses may be required. Specialized training lists are available via OneDrive. Each PI folder contains separate training requirement documents for every laboratory space they oversee.

Laboratory Safety Training Requirements

  •

Safety training is not a one-time requirement; it must be renewed annually. To ensure compliance for the upcoming academic year, training must be completed every August.

Do not pour chemicals down the drain or place them in regular trash. To dispose of them properly:

  1. Create a detailed inventory of the chemicals you want removed.
  2. Email EHS directly at hazwaste@fit.edu.
  3. In your email, include the completed inventory list and the exact location (building and room number) of the items to be picked up.

Lab Access

The process depends on whether your lab uses card reader access or physical keys:

For Card Access (ID Card Swipes):
  1. Ensure you have completed all required safety training modules for that specific lab space.
  2. Complete the Lab Access Request Form.
  3. The form will automatically route to your Principal Investigator (PI) or Lab Supervisor for approval.
  4. A Lab Manager will then review the request to verify your completed safety training.
  5. Once approved, card access is typically processed on Fridays.
For Physical Key Access:
  1. Ensure you have completed all required safety training modules for that specific lab space.
  2. Complete the Access Control Request Form.
  3. Access Control will process the request and notify you when your physical key is ready for pickup.

Purchasing & Ordering

All teaching lab purchases are processed by Aurora. You can reach her directly by email at aburkusmates2019@fit.edu.

Yes. To streamline procurement and budget tracking, all teaching lab purchases must be submitted using the COES Teaching Lab Purchase Request Form.

  • Note: To prevent ordering delays, please ensure you include vendor names, item numbers, quantities, and direct web links to the items.

Panther Works primarily manages operations, safety compliance, and purchasing for teaching laboratories. However, we can assist with certain research purchases under specific circumstances:

  • Research Orders: Research-related purchases should typically be coordinated directly through your Principal Investigator (PI) or administrative assistant.
  • Assistance Needed: If you need assistance with a research purchase, you can reach out to Aurora at aburkusmates2019@fit.edu with a completed Research Purchase Request Form.
  • If you have a unique setup or need guidance finding specialized equipment, feel free to email coeslabs@fit.edu and we will gladly point you in the right direction!
