About RBT Essentials Training

RBT® Essentials is a noncredit training program designed to meet the BACB® 2026 40-hour training requirement for RBT certification. It is not part of a degree program or academic coursework. RBT Essentials is offered independent of the BACB.

About the Training

The Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT) is a paraprofessional certification for individuals who implement behavior-analytic services under the supervision of a qualified BCaBA®, BCBA® or BCBA-D®.

The RBT credential is issued and regulated by the BACB®.

No. RBT Essentials is not provided by the BACB. It is an independent training program that fulfills the 40-hour RBT training requirement for certification.

The BACB sets certification requirements and issues the RBT credential.

RBT Essentials is developed by Florida Tech’s ABA Online program in collaboration with ABA Technologies, Inc.

Training is provided by experienced BCBAs and is designed for learner engagement. The training program is aligned with the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition) and includes relevant ethics content.

Eligibility and Requirements

This entry-level training course is designed for teachers, parents, direct care staff and others who support individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities and want foundational behavior analysis skills.

Yes. Enrollment in RBT Essentials is open internationally.

RBT certification eligibility requirements vary by country. If you plan to pursue certification, review current requirements on the BACB website.

You must be at least 18 years old before starting the course.

Requirements are set by the BACB and include:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Complete a 40-hour RBT training aligned with the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition) and Curriculum Outline
  • Complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified supervisor
  • Pass a background check

Course Format and Access

Yes. All RBT Essentials training is completed online in a self-paced format.

Learners must also complete the training within BACB-required time limits, including a minimum 5-day duration and a maximum 180-day completion window.

Students must complete the training within a minimum of 5 days and a maximum of 180 days, as required by the BACB.

Access to the training course begins at the time of payment.

Access expires 179 days after enrollment, with the enrollment day counted as day 1 per BACB requirements.

You can view your exact expiration date in Canvas using a desktop browser. Click on your course and check the upper left corner of your screen.

No. RBT Essentials includes the 40-hour RBT training only. The Initial Competency Assessment must be completed separately with a qualified supervisor.

RBT Essentials training is delivered through the Canvas LMS and requires a device that meets Canvas minimum system requirements.

  • High-speed internet connection
  • Windows 11 or macOS 13 or higher
  • At least 2 GB free disk space
  • Speakers or headphones
  • PDF reader (e.g., Adobe Reader)
  • Current version of Chrome, Firefox or Edge

Mobile devices and tablets may not support all course features. A laptop or desktop computer is recommended.

The invite email is sent from notifications@instructure.com and may be filtered to spam or junk folders. Please check those folders and safelist the address.

Course Details and Completion

No. There are no required textbooks for RBT Essentials. All necessary materials are included in the course.

No. Florida Tech does not currently offer a Spanish version of the training.

The BACB certification exam is administered in English.

All course requirements must be completed within 180 days to meet BACB training standards. If the course is not completed within this timeframe, a certificate of completion will not be issued.

To complete training, the course must be repurchased and restarted from the beginning.

Certificates of completion are automatically generated after submission of the Completion Survey. They are emailed to the address on file and can also be downloaded from the Canvas Catalog Student Dashboard.

You can print your certificate, write your BACB number on it and scan it to save digitally.
