National Association of Women in Construction

Enhancing Success of Women in the Construction Industry

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) strives to enhance the success of women in the construction industry. Founded in 1953 as Women in Construction by a group of 16 women in Fort Worth, Texas, the organization provides a support network for women in the construction industry and to demonstrate the industry as a desirable career path for women. The organization provides its members with opportunities for professional development, leadership training, public service, networking and more.

By 1955, the NAWIC achieved its first national charter and officially became known as the National Association of Women in Construction. Today, the NAWIC is governed by a  board of directors and has more than 100 chapters throughout the United States along with several international affiliate organizations.

The Space Coast chapter of NAWIC was chartered on October 5, 1996.  The chapter membership strives to enhance the core purpose of NAWIC through various community projects, education programs and business related programs. Since the inception of the Florida Tech construction management program, the NAWIC has been a very active supporter providing monthly meetings and networking opportunities for women students, as well as scholarships to deserving students who are pursuing a career in construction management.

NAWIC also sponsors an annual program to encourage grade school children to pursue careers in construction and construction management. This program, called “Block Kids,” organizes children into age-specific groups where they compete to visualize and construct themed projects from a bag of LEGO blocks and assorted materials. Florida Tech instructors and students serve as judges for this exciting annual contest and thereby have the opportunity to share their dreams and expertise with these budding construction managers.

The NAWIC website provides a wealth of industry information, career resources, industry publications, scholarship opportunities, and other member benefits.
