Policy Purpose

To establish criteria for admission to the Honors College

Policy Scope

This policy describes the Honors College admission criteria for prospective undergraduate students, prospective transfer students, and current students in main campus Bachelor’s degree programs.

Policy Statement

Students may apply to the Honors College after official admission to Florida Tech. Applications are accepted until a student has completed 55 credits towards earning a Bachelor’s degree at Florida Tech.

Minimum Requirements for Consideration for Admission to the Honors College

Incoming First Time in College (FTIC) Students (including during the first term):

  • 1350 SAT or 32 ACT score,
  • 4.0 or higher admission GPA, and
  • demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, particularly those with leadership roles. 

Transfer Students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and First-Semester Juniors) (including during the first term):

  • 3.8 or higher transfer GPA,
  • 24 transfer credit hours, and
  • demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, particularly those with leadership roles 

Current Florida Tech Students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and First-Semester Juniors):

  • 3.8 or higher Florida Tech GPA,
  • demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, particularly those with leadership roles,

or

  • A/B final grade in at least three Honors courses and demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, particularly those with leadership roles

Procedures/Guidelines

Admission Process for High School Seniors and Transfer Students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and First-Semester Juniors):

  • The Office of Undergraduate Admission identifies admitted high school seniors and transfer students that meet the minimum admission criteria and invites them to apply for admission to the Honors College.
  • Newly admitted first term freshmen, sophomores, and juniors may apply to the Honors College in their first term and will be evaluated using the FTIC and Transfer admissions criteria.
  • The Honors College reviews the applications and issues an admission decision for each student.
  • The Honors College sends students an email notification of the decision. 

Admission Process for Current Florida Tech Students (Freshmen, Sophomores, and First-Semester Juniors):

  • Current Florida Tech students that meet the minimum admission criteria may apply for admission to the Honors College.
  • Current Florida Tech students may also be nominated by Florida Tech faculty or advisors for consideration. Nominated students are contacted by the Honors College and encouraged to apply for admission.
  • Two letters of recommendation from Florida Tech faculty members must be sent to honors@fit.edu in support of the student’s Honors College application.
  • The Honors College reviews the applications and issues an admission decision.
  • The Honors College sends students an email notification of the decision.

Definitions

Incoming First Time in College (FTIC) Student: A student who has never attended a  postsecondary institution or who has earned less than twelve semester hours of transferable college credit since receiving a standard high school diploma or its equivalent

Transfer Student: A student who has completed at least 24 or more hours at a previous college

Current Florida Tech Student: A student who is enrolled at Florida Tech 

Freshman: A student who has completed 0-29 credit hours (including transfer credits) 

Sophomore: A student who has completed 30-55 credit hours (including transfer credits) 

Junior: A student who has completed 56-84 credit hours (including transfer credits)

Compliance Reference

This policy is to ensure compliance with SACSCOC Standard 10.5 Admissions Policies and Practices.

Responsibilities

The Office of the Provost and Honors College implement the policy and related communications as the policy owner. Honors College monitors for effectiveness and compliance, reviews the policy at least annually, and recommends updates or revisions as needed. 

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is responsible for identifying eligible new admitted high school seniors and transfer students to apply for admission to the Honors College. 

The Honors College works in collaboration with the academic units and faculty to invite current Florida Tech students to apply for admission to the Honors College. 

The Honors College reviews all applications and sends students an email notification of the decision.
