As there is no socialized or national system of health care in the United States and medical treatment is expensive, ALL international students are required to maintain full health insurance coverage throughout their course of study. University health insurance is automatically billed to your student account each semester as a part of your tuition and fees, meaning you will be covered through Florida Tech’s student health insurance plan.
Questions regarding Health Insurance? Please be sure to review the Florida Institute of Technology Student Health Insurance Plan.
Student health insurance is MANDATORY for full-time undergraduate (12 or more credits) and graduate (9 or more credits) students, including those enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Online students and students attending classes through Extended Studies or Florida Tech Online do not meet the eligibility requirements.
Domestic students may apply to waive university-sponsored insurance by providing proof of coverage through PantherPass by the end of the second Friday of classes.
It is MANDATORY for all international students to be covered by the university's health insurance plan.
Exceptions may be granted only if you have an insurance plan that meets very strict requirements in order for you to qualify for the waiver. You may request a waiver of the insurance fee by completing a form and providing proof of appropriate insurance to the Business and Retail Operations Office. Waiver forms are available from the Business and Retail Operations Office. Florida Tech will not accept coverage by an insurance company outside the United States. Some international students are officially sponsored by their home government or an agency which guarantees their health insurance fees as part of their contract with Florida Tech. Students in this category may be eligible to receive a waiver of the Florida Tech health insurance fee.
A waiver of the Florida Tech health insurance fee may be possible only when very strict requirements have been met. If you carry insurance from your home country (or other sponsor) that covers you while you are in the United States, you may request a waiver, which must be submitted to Florida Tech together with proof of your own health insurance.
It should be noted that the deadline for processing health insurance waivers is the end of the second week of class each semester. There are no exceptions.
All international students who are married or single parents with one or more children living with them may purchase health insurance for their dependents by completing the appropriate form in the Campus Services Office and paying for the additional insurance at the Comptroller’s office. Note: If your dependent(s) enroll at Florida Tech they will be charged for their own university health insurance, unless a waiver is requested by the required deadline.
Preventing many diseases is best accomplished with vaccinations. Find further information at Health Information Documents.
Students should go to the Holtzer Student Health Center on campus (http://www.fit.edu/health/) which maintains services designed to meet the primary health care needs of all Florida Tech students.
