Research Training Requirements and Resources

Florida Tech researchers can use this page to determine which training requirements apply to their research activities, funding agencies and compliance responsibilities, and access the required training programs and resources.

NSF

Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR)

For NSF proposals submitted on or after July 31, 2023:

  • All faculty and other senior personnel named on the proposal must complete an approved form of RECR Training before any funding can be awarded.
  • Postdocs, grad students and undergraduates are also still required to complete RCR training before conducting NSF-supported research.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

  • NIH training grants require RCR training for faculty, staff and students
  • CITI RCR Training is required in conjunction with in-person training.

This Notice applies to the following programs: D43, D71, F05, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F37, F38, K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K12, K18, K22, K23, K24, K25, K26, K30, K99/R00, KL1, KL2, R25, R36, T15, T32, T34, T35, T36, T37, T90/R90, TL1, TU2, and U2R. This policy also applies to any other NIH-funded programs supporting research training, career development, or research education that require instruction in responsible conduct of research as stated in the relevant funding opportunity announcements.

  • USDA RCR training is required for faculty, staff, and students.

Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

  • CUI training is required for all faculty, staff and students with access to controlled unclassified information.

NSF | NIH | USDA | DOE | DoD | NASA

Research Security

Research security training is required for proposals submitted to NSF, NIH, USDA, DOE and DoD. Effective August 5, 2026 it is required for proposals submitted to NASA as well.

  • Required for all proposers PI, Co-PI, and individuals identified as senior/key personnel, no later than 12 months before the proposal submission.
  • Access research security training through the University of Washington Secure Center or in the Workday Learning Center.

Section 10634, Research Security Training Requirements for Federal Research Award Personnel, of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (42 U.S.C. § 19234) established this government-wide research security training requirement for federally funded research and development awards.

Export Control

  • Export control training is required for all faculty, staff and students performing work on an export controlled project.

Animal Health and Welfare

  • Activities related to the care and use of vertebrate animals must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Completion of training courses and enrollment in the Research Animal Contact Program are required prior to IACUC approval.

Human Subjects Research

  • Research involving human subjects must undergo review or be formally determined to qualify for exemption by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  • CITI training certification is strongly encouraged for IRB submission.
