Use of AI: Protecting the Brand

The following guidelines apply to the use of generative AI as it relates to university brand standards and trademark protections. See Responsible Use of Generative AI in Academic Work as it relates to licensed university tools and academic integrity.

While the ubiquity of AI tools has expanded opportunities for iterative brainstorming and workflow enhancement, it has also given rise to ethical concerns and copyright issues.

University trademarks, including our name (Florida Tech and Florida Institute of Technology) and logos (tagline logo, primary logo, university wordmark, university seal, and athletics marks) may not be used in AI-generated content.

The university’s signature, seal and other marks are registered and protected by law, and recreation of these assets by generative AI is strictly prohibited.

These guidelines are designed to ensure all campus communicators, including faculty, staff, students and alumni, maintain honesty and integrity when portraying the Florida Tech brand.

Never use AI to generate content that:

  • inauthentically represents our campus, including its location, grounds, architecture and infrastructure
  • creates fictional imagery of campus activities that might be construed as real event coverage
  • places Pete the Panther in any questionable scenarios—realistically or illustratively

Best practices:

  • Content for official university communications, particularly those directed at prospective students and families, alumni, current student, faculty and staff, should be developed in consultation with University Marketing and designed by Creative Services.
  • Avoid uploading AI-generated art into a Creative Services request. Instead, share the details you would have used for an AI prompt directly with the human design team.
